ver the weekend we had posted our synopsis of Solaris Express Community Edition Build 93, which brings a great deal of needed changes to the Solaris Nevada code-base in order to bring its packages up-to-date. While OpenSolaris 2008.05 is only two months old, work at Sun is already underway in preparing for the second OpenSolaris release, which will be known as OpenSolaris 2008.11 and has been codenamed Jericho. OpenSolaris development packages for this next release, which are currently based upon Solaris Nevada Build 93, are now available through an IPS update along with early ISO spins.

The Aquarium: GlassFish in BeleniX DVD Edition
GlassFish is now in the BeneliX 0.5.1 distribution. BeneliX is an OpenSolaris Distribution with a Live CD (runs directly off the CD, or the USB drive, or installed on your hard disk) with additional FOSS packages. There is now a DVD distribution that includes GlassFish, OpenOffice, NetBeans and more. BeleniX news are here.

ArsTechnica calls OpenSolaris 2008.05 a work in progress
The OpenSolaris project, which has been slowly gaining momentum over the past year, issued its first official release last week. Designed with an emphasis on usability and easy installation, OpenSolaris aims to provide a complete desktop platform for users and developers built on top of Sun's Solaris kernel.
