SUN OpenSourcing it's Web Server Product line

Sun announced its decision to open source the core kernel of Sun Java System Web Server under BSD license. It is interesting that SUN has chosen the BSD license instead of GPL3 or CDDL for this. This appears to be intended to better share code with Apache and LightHTTPD.

An Early Look At OpenSolaris 2008.11

ver the weekend we had posted our synopsis of Solaris Express Community Edition Build 93, which brings a great deal of needed changes to the Solaris Nevada code-base in order to bring its packages up-to-date. While OpenSolaris 2008.05 is only two months old, work at Sun is already underway in preparing for the second OpenSolaris release, which will be known as OpenSolaris 2008.11 and has been codenamed Jericho. OpenSolaris development packages for this next release, which are currently based upon Solaris Nevada Build 93, are now available through an IPS update along with early ISO spins.

Solaris gears up for new processors

OpenSolaris still has some Linux copying to do

Sun has made good on its promise to deliver OpenSolaris, the company's Unix-based answer to Linux, with a company-supported, commercial update arriving in mid-May. Although far from a complete product, the latest OpenSolaris is impressive and in the long run could prove a viable alternative to Linux.

SUN and Intel Partnership on OpenSolaris

Enterprise Unix Roundup: Sun Should Loosen Up

Last week, Simon Phipps, Chief Open Source Officer at Sun Microsystems, stated in an interview that much of the current animosity from the open source community toward Sun has its origins in the way Sun used to treat the community.

Phipps, being his usual straightforward self, phrased it as Sun "screwed up," a quote guaranteed to make headlines, which it did.
